Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion

Nine out of ten adults will be on at least one medication and four out of ten will be on at least five! It is important to understand how this affects our body’s ability to function. Optimal function is key to becoming and staying healthy.

With the myriad of prescription drugs that are being taken, especially in combination, there is a definite impact on the overall function of the body. It is well documented that certain medications deplete very specific nutrients within the body. These depletions have consequences because your body needs these nutrients in adequate amounts to support normal body functions.

CoQ10 is depleted by medications, such as Lipitor, Zocor Propranolol, Metoprolol and Hydrochlorothiazide. These same medications have also been shown to decrease levels of vitamin E. Both of these nutrients are needed in adequate amounts to help the body decrease inflammation & increase production of T-cells responsible for immune response.

Blood pressure medications like Lisinopril, Lasix or HCTZ are associated with the depletion of Zinc. Zinc can also be depleted with antibiotics and estrogen replacement therapy. Zinc is vital to maintaining a healthy immune system.

Healthy and appropriate levels of these nutrients, along with many others, are an important part of staying healthy. A complete health evaluation can help you determine the nutrients you need to support your body for a long and healthy life. Come in for your free evaluation.
